A 70-year-old woman who went missing after taking a walk on Lake Winnipegosis in western Manitoba is believed to have drowned, RCMP said Thursday.
The woman had gone for a routine walk with her two dogs but never returned home, prompting concern among her family. One of her relatives went to the lake to search for her and discovered one of the dogs sitting alone on the ice. This led to an immediate search operation in the area.
Authorities and search teams later found the woman beneath the ice, and she was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Searchers also noted dangerous open water areas on the lake, highlighting the risks of thin ice conditions at this time of year.
RCMP have not released the woman’s identity but confirmed that their investigation into the incident is ongoing. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unstable ice, especially as temperatures fluctuate during seasonal transitions.
Local authorities urge residents to exercise extreme caution near frozen bodies of water and to be aware of changing ice conditions that can pose significant hazards.
