A devastating fire tore through a crowded nightclub in Kocani, North Macedonia, early Sunday, killing 59 people and injuring more than 100 after sparks from pyrotechnics ignited the roof during a live performance.
Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski confirmed arrest warrants for four individuals, with state news agency Mia reporting that police have detained the club’s owner. A video verified by Reuters captured the moment sparks from stage flares set the ceiling ablaze, causing widespread panic as patrons scrambled for safety.
Survivor Marija Taseva, 22, recounted the chaos, describing how she was trampled while trying to escape. She lost contact with her sister, who remains missing. “We can’t find her in any hospital,” she told local TV 5.
Health Minister Arben Taravari reported that 148 people were hospitalized across Skopje, Kocani, and nearby towns, with 18 critically injured. North Macedonia’s MRT broadcaster stated that 27 individuals suffered severe burns at Skopje City Hospital, while 23 others were treated at a clinical center, including minors.
Authorities confirmed the fire started around 3 a.m. due to “pyrotechnic devices” that ignited the nightclub’s roof. Public prosecutor Ljupco Kocevski announced an ongoing investigation with five prosecutors gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Media reports indicate that the venue was hosting a hip-hop concert when the fire erupted, leading to the partial collapse of its corrugated roof. Footage revealed firefighters battling the blaze and ambulances rushing victims from the scene.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski called the incident “a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia,” mourning the loss of young lives. North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, visibly emotional after visiting the injured, pledged full government support for those affected.
