A section of an elevated highway under construction collapsed in South Korea on Tuesday, killing four workers and injuring six others, officials confirmed.
The accident occurred near Cheonan, approximately 90 kilometers south of Seoul, where ten workers were on site. The collapse sent them falling and trapped them under the rubble, according to the National Fire Agency.
Rescue teams discovered one worker dead at the scene, while eight injured individuals were transported to hospitals. Two of them later succumbed to their injuries. The tenth worker, missing for hours, was eventually found dead, fire agency officials reported.
Images from the site depict large bridge pillars in a rural area, illustrating the extent of the devastation.
The fire agency stated that five workers remain in critical condition. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok has ordered authorities to deploy all available personnel and equipment for the rescue operation. The emergency response included 50 fire trucks, three helicopters, and around 150 rescue personnel.
