Tragic Edmonton Riverbank Death: Daughter Remembers Mother as a Selfless, Kind-Hearted Soul

The tragic death of Ashley Burke, a 43-year-old Edmonton woman, has left her family and community grieving. Burke was found deceased on Dec. 30 along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River near Whitemud Park, east of the Quesnell Bridge. Authorities have confirmed her death resulted from intimate partner violence, and 31-year-old Daniel Boothman has been charged with second-degree murder.

Burke’s daughter, 20-year-old Abigail Michele Robson, continues to grapple with the devastating loss of her mother, whom she described as a selfless and compassionate individual. Robson fondly remembered Burke’s East Coast charm, her willingness to help anyone in need, and the close bond they shared, especially in recent years.

“She was a kind, strong woman who would do anything for anybody,” Robson said. “It was just me and my mom against everything. She was my best friend.”

Ashley Burke originally hailed from Pictou, Nova Scotia, where she enjoyed a happy upbringing and worked at a local pizza shop before moving to Alberta a decade ago to provide better opportunities for her daughter. Despite battling substance use issues, Burke was making strides toward recovery, with her daughter offering unwavering support.

As the investigation into Burke’s death continues, Robson hopes her mother’s tragic story will raise awareness about the pervasive issue of intimate partner violence, particularly in Alberta, where rates remain alarmingly high. Robson emphasized that her mother’s struggles should not overshadow the love, strength, and kindness she embodied throughout her life.

Burke’s remains will be laid to rest in her family’s plot in Pictou, Nova Scotia, as relatives gather to say their goodbyes. Robson, reflecting on her mother’s impact, wishes for one more hug but takes solace in the chance to say a final farewell.
