A devastating bus accident in southern Mexico early Saturday morning resulted in the deaths of 41 people, according to a statement from the government of Tabasco state. Recovery efforts are still ongoing.
The bus, carrying 48 passengers, collided with a truck, killing 38 passengers and two of the drivers. The truck driver also lost his life, local authorities confirmed.
Images from Reuters depict the aftermath, showing the bus completely burned out, with only its skeletal metal frame remaining after being engulfed in flames.
Security officials in Tabasco, speaking anonymously, reported that “only 18 skulls have been confirmed so far, but much more is missing,” as recovery operations continue.
Bus operator Tours Acosta expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy in a Facebook post, stating that it is cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the crash and whether the bus was within the speed limit.
