The vibrant heart of Santo Domingo’s nightlife was shattered early Tuesday as the iconic Jet Set nightclub collapsed mid-performance, leaving at least 58 dead and over 150 hospitalized. Emergency teams raced to pull survivors from the wreckage, while specialized canine units scoured the ruins for signs of life.
Performing that night was legendary merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Though initially feared trapped, his daughter later confirmed he was alive but injured. The band’s saxophonist, however, was among the deceased.
Notable victims include retired MLB star Octavio Dotel and Nelsy Cruz, governor of Montecristi and sister to MLB’s Nelson Cruz. Cruz called President Luis Abinader from under the rubble before succumbing to her injuries.
The cause of the collapse remains unclear, but President Abinader assured the nation that all rescue services are fully mobilized. “We have faith in God that we will rescue even more people alive,” he stated on site.
What began as a night of music and joy turned into an unimaginable tragedy, shaking the Dominican Republic’s cultural scene and leaving families clinging to hope.
