President Bola Tinubu on Friday called for divine intervention to address Nigeria’s ongoing challenges, including national stability, security, and economic hardship. Speaking at the National Mosque in Abuja after observing Jumaat prayers ahead of his 73rd birthday, Tinubu expressed gratitude for God’s protection and reaffirmed his commitment to national service.
“I prayed for our country to stabilize, keep in peace, and safeguard all the citizens,” Tinubu stated. His birthday coincides with Ramadan’s peak, adding a spiritual dimension to his call for nationwide prayers.
However, Kunle Wizeman Ajayi, former African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate in Ondo State and member of the TakeItBack Movement, dismissed Tinubu’s appeal as an insult to struggling Nigerians.
“The plea is audaciously embarrassing; an injurious confidence to inflict wounds and rub salt on them,” Ajayi declared, urging Nigerians to reject the call and instead respond with mass action. He criticized the government’s economic policies, including subsidy removals, which have worsened hardship.
Ajayi argued that religious influence in politics is waning, signaling a shift in social consciousness. He called on religious leaders to take inspiration from Latin America, where churches played a role in resisting oppressive regimes.
“The people are hungrier than ever, and distributing disgraceful crumbs as palliatives is merely a distraction from the imposed austerity,” he added. He urged Nigerians across all faiths to unite in challenging policies that deepen economic hardship.
