Tighter U.S. Immigration Policies Make Canadians Rethink Travel Plans

As the U.S. intensifies its immigration crackdown, some Canadians are reconsidering trips south of the border. American immigration lawyer Len Saunders notes that recent detentions and new registration requirements for extended stays are making travelers “pause and think twice.”

The case of Vancouver entrepreneur Jasmine Mooney has heightened concerns. A routine visa renewal at a San Diego border checkpoint turned into a 12-day detention, leaving her confused about the process. Saunders, who advised Mooney, says he has never seen a Canadian detained for paperwork issues before.

He now advises Canadians to fly instead of driving across the border, as U.S. pre-flight clearance in Canada prevents detainment. Amid these concerns, Saunders believes the new policies are having a “chilling effect” on Canadian travel to the U.S.
