In the heart of southeastern China, a unique café is drawing adrenaline junkies from around the country. Gushi Cliff Coffee, perched 70 meters above the sea with stunning views of the Taiwan Strait, is offering a heart-stopping experience that’s not for the faint of heart.
For 398 yuan (roughly $56), visitors can climb down a 130-meter cliff (about 43 stories high) and sip on an iced Americano while perched on a bench that seems to defy gravity. Guests are guided along a via ferrata route secured to the cliff face before reaching the café, where their drink is served by a coach-turned-photographer, making it the ultimate thrill-seeker’s photoshoot.
Ye Kunkun, one of the café’s early patrons, recalled the nerve-wracking experience: “I was scared at first when I saw the cliff right ahead of me,” but with the guidance of her coach, her fear quickly faded. Once on the cliffside bench, she snapped a photo with her legs dangling over the edge, making for a once-in-a-lifetime shot.
Gushi Cliff Coffee, which opened on October 1, 2024, during China’s Golden Week holiday, has quickly become a viral sensation on social media platforms like Xiaohongshu. Visitors share daring photos and videos, some of which capture proposals and birthday parties held in this breathtaking (and slightly terrifying) setting.
For the price of admission, customers receive not only coffee and a safe climbing experience but also insurance, safety gear, and a “unique filming experience” to immortalize their high-altitude adventure. The café, backed by a 1.5 million yuan ($210,000) government grant, hopes to boost local tourism as part of China’s rural revitalization efforts.
While the stunning coastal views attract visitors from all over, the café’s location is particularly notable for its proximity to Taiwan. Visitors can see the Matsu Islands across the Taiwan Strait, adding an emotional layer to the experience that has captivated tourists.
For Ye, the experience was more than just a thrill—it was an emotional journey. “The photos turned out amazing,” she said, praising the patience of her coach who helped her feel comfortable while capturing the perfect shot.
This one-of-a-kind café continues to fuel excitement, with thrill-seekers booking visits weeks in advance to climb and sip their way through China’s newest extreme adventure.
