A high-speed incident on one of Ontario’s busiest travel corridors took a dangerous turn this past weekend as a 21-year-old Thorold man was arrested for allegedly driving 262 km/h while impaired. According to the Ontario Provincial Police, the shocking traffic violation occurred on Saturday along the northbound lanes of Highway 427 at Langstaff Road in Vaughan—a stretch frequently used by travelers heading toward cottage country and other destinations.
The suspect, identified as Arjun Syan, was reportedly caught red-handed by an OPP officer patrolling the area. The driver’s speed, clocked at more than double the posted limit, posed a serious threat to public safety on a highway often congested with long weekend travelers and daily commuters alike.
Police confirmed that Syan was immediately taken into custody and now faces multiple charges, including operation while impaired, operation while impaired over 80, dangerous driving, stunt driving, and obstructing a plate. In addition to the charges, his driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 14 days as a consequence of the incident.
Syan is scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket on May 6 to answer to the charges. The OPP issued a firm reminder to all motorists: “Slow down and do not drink and drive.”
Highway 427 is a key travel route for Ontarians heading north for leisure, and such extreme violations threaten not just the driver, but everyone sharing the road. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of responsible driving—especially as we approach peak travel season.
