CBC’s “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” TSN’s 2024 Copa America coverage, and Nelly Furtado were among the standout winners at the first of several Canadian Screen Awards galas.

Nelly Furtado claimed the award for best host of a live entertainment special for leading the 2024 Juno Awards, which also secured best live entertainment special.

CBC’s long-running satirical show “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” earned the most wins of the night, sweeping four sketch comedy categories including best program, writing, direction, and performance.

CTV News’ “National News with Omar Sachedina” was named best national newscast. CBC’s “The Fifth Estate” won best news or information series, and CTV’s “The Good Stuff with Mary Berg” took best talk or entertainment news series.

CBC’s Adrienne Arsenault won best news anchor for “The National,” while Jeff Semple of “Global National” was awarded best national reporter. CBC Indigenous’s Jackie McKay won best local reporter.

TSN’s 2024 Copa America coverage scored three wins for best sports program, opening, and host for James Duthie. CBC’s Mark Lee took best sports play-by-play for the 2024 Paris Olympics coverage.

Global BC’s “News Hour” won best local newscast and best local news anchor went to Chris Gailus and Sophie Lui.

More awards will be distributed at upcoming galas for documentary, factual, lifestyle, and reality categories, culminating in marquee film, television, and digital media honors on Sunday, broadcast by CBC.
