Tesla Dropped from Vancouver Auto Show Amid Protests and Trade Tensions

The Vancouver International Auto Show has removed Tesla from its event this week, citing security concerns amid rising protests against the electric carmaker and its CEO, Elon Musk. The decision follows growing backlash over Musk’s ties to U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has imposed steep tariffs on Canadian imports.

Tesla, already facing demonstrations at its dealerships and exclusion from B.C.’s electric vehicle rebate programs, was reportedly given multiple opportunities to withdraw voluntarily. However, organizers ultimately opted to remove the company to ensure the safety of attendees and exhibitors.

Event director Eric Nicholl stated that the removal was not politically motivated but rather a precautionary measure in response to escalating tensions across North America. “This decision ensures that the safety of our guests and attendees is paramount,” he said.

Musk’s close association with Trump, particularly through his role in the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, has made Tesla a focal point of Canadian protests. While once seen as a champion of clean energy, Musk’s reputation has shifted, with critics pointing to his free speech policies on X and his influence within the U.S. administration.

The Vancouver Auto Show, which attracts over 100,000 attendees, runs from Wednesday to Sunday at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Tesla’s removal marks an unusual move in the event’s history, with no other automaker having been excluded in recent years.
