Tencent’s Weixin messaging app, China’s largest, is now allowing select users to access DeepSeek’s AI model for search functionality, according to a Sunday statement from the tech giant. The beta test, confirmed to Reuters, highlights Tencent’s move to collaborate with the AI startup amid fierce industry competition.
Weixin leverages Tencent’s Hunyuan large language model to enhance AI search capabilities, with plans to integrate DeepSeek across products like Tencent Cloud AI Code Assistant and Tencent Yuanbao. Currently, testing is limited to Weixin’s domestic user base, which, alongside sister app WeChat, reached a combined 1.38 billion users as of September.
DeepSeek has rapidly disrupted the AI sector with its free, cost-efficient assistant, surpassing ChatGPT in downloads on Apple’s App Store. Chinese firms, including Great Wall Motor and major telecom providers, are actively adopting the model, while Baidu also announced plans to fully integrate DeepSeek with its search engine and proprietary Ernie model.
