An 18-year-old Winnipeg man crashed a stolen Acura MDX into a commercial building after hitting a light pole and ramming a police vehicle early Saturday morning, according to the Winnipeg Police Service.
A police canine unit spotted the stolen SUV around 2 a.m. Saturday, driving eastbound on McDermot Avenue toward Arlington Street. The vehicle had been reported stolen from a parking lot on Thursday.
With assistance from general patrol officers, police followed the SUV as it attempted to evade capture, heading south on Arlington Street before striking a streetlight. As the canine unit approached, the driver rammed a police vehicle before speeding away.
Shortly after, the suspect lost control and crashed into a commercial building on the 900 block of Notre Dame Avenue, east of McPhillips Street. He then attempted to flee on foot but was arrested after a brief chase.
No injuries were reported, but the crash caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the building.
The suspect was charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and four counts of failing to comply with sentence conditions. He remains in custody.
