The seventh season of Sweden’s “The Great Moose Migration” wrapped up on Sunday night after 20 days of continuous live coverage, captivating millions of viewers worldwide. The slow TV phenomenon, known as “Den stora älgvandringen” in Swedish, began in 2019 and saw a surge in popularity, attracting 9 million viewers on SVT Play in 2024. This year’s season began early on April 15, as warm weather prompted an earlier-than-usual migration of moose.
The live stream captured 478 hours of footage, including 70 moose crossing the Ångerman River, located 300 kilometers northwest of Stockholm, as part of their annual spring migration. SVT project manager Johan Erhag expressed satisfaction with the production, which continues to draw international attention to the growing slow TV trend that began with Norway’s minute-by-minute airing of a seven-hour train trip in 2009. Other countries, including the UK and China, have since adopted similar formats, such as the “fish doorbell” livestream in Utrecht, Netherlands.
