Sudan Conflict Approaches Third Year Mark Amid Intensifying RSF Attacks in Darfur
As Sudan’s brutal civil conflict nears its third year, fresh violence is erupting in the Darfur region, where the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have significantly escalated their military offensives. The deteriorating security situation raises growing alarm among international observers and humanitarian organizations, who warn of worsening atrocities and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
The RSF, a powerful paramilitary group led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as “Hemedti,” has ramped up assaults on key areas across Darfur in recent weeks. Local sources and human rights monitors report widespread violence, including targeted killings, mass displacements, and systematic looting in towns such as El Fasher, Nyala, and Geneina.
Darfur, a region historically plagued by conflict, has once again become the epicenter of brutality. The latest RSF offensives are part of a broader campaign to seize strategic control of western Sudan, intensifying an already devastating power struggle with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Analysts describe the fighting in Darfur as one of the most concerning dimensions of the Sudan conflict, with ethnic tensions and historical grievances fueling some of the bloodiest confrontations seen since the war erupted in April 2023. The civilian population continues to bear the brunt of the violence, with reports of villages being razed, food supplies blocked, and hospitals attacked.
The United Nations has sounded the alarm, calling the situation in Darfur “catastrophic.” Martin Griffiths, the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, has appealed for an immediate cessation of hostilities and unimpeded humanitarian access to conflict zones. However, aid organizations face enormous challenges, including lack of security, blocked supply routes, and communication blackouts.
Over 8 million people have been displaced since the onset of the war, according to UN estimates, making Sudan the site of one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing humanitarian crises. Many of the displaced are now living in overcrowded camps or attempting to flee across borders into Chad and South Sudan, placing further strain on neighboring nations already grappling with instability.
The international response has been widely criticized as inadequate. While some regional and global powers have attempted to mediate ceasefires, none have succeeded in halting the violence. Human rights advocates continue to urge stronger sanctions, diplomatic pressure, and greater attention to the mounting war crimes allegations.
As Sudan approaches the grim milestone of three years at war, hopes for peace remain distant. With the RSF’s recent advances in Darfur, fears are growing that the conflict may escalate into a broader regional disaster if left unchecked.
The world’s attention is once again drawn to Sudan—not only because of the escalating military offensives, but because of the enduring human cost of a conflict that shows no signs of abating.
