According to a filing from April 24, 2025, Wan Hai Lines has secured a contract for two methanol-ready container vessels with HD Hyundai Samho and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). The deal, valued at up to $816 million, involves the construction of two 16,000 TEU boxships at each shipyard. The contract sees Wan Hai paying between $186.5 million and $204 million per vessel at HD Hyundai, and a similar price range at SHI.
The delivery dates for these newbuildings remain undisclosed.
Wan Hai Lines, one of the world’s largest container shipping companies, currently operates over 120 vessels. Among its more recent additions are the 13,100 TEU Wan Hai A16 and Wan Hai A17, both constructed by SHI, with the latter joining the fleet in September 2024.
In addition to this order, Wan Hai commissioned the construction of eight similar methanol-ready container ships in October 2024. These vessels, also from HD Hyundai and SHI, are expected to have similar values but their delivery dates have not been revealed. Earlier, in September 2024, Wan Hai also committed to purchasing up to 20 methanol-ready container ships under construction at CSBC Corporation and HD Hyundai Samho.
The Taiwanese shipping company’s growing fleet is part of its strategy to expand its capacity, with the addition of dual-fuel vessels expected to enhance its environmental performance.
