U.K. Braces for Hottest Day of the Year as Temperatures Approach 30°C

The U.K. is set to experience its hottest day of the year on Thursday, with temperatures potentially reaching 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit), marking the earliest recorded instance of such heat in May. This follows one of the warmest and driest Aprils on record, with forecasters predicting that the heat will peak in London before cooler weather begins to drift in from the north on Friday, potentially disrupting plans for the upcoming three-day weekend.

Michael Silverstone, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, confirmed that southern England could see temperatures hit 30°C, making it the earliest date in May to reach this milestone since records began in 1860. The warmest day so far this year was on Wednesday, when temperatures reached 26.7°C in Wisley, south of London.

Authorities have cautioned the public about the risks of swimming in open water, as water temperatures remain low for the time of year. The London Fire Brigade also issued warnings about a 32% increase in water-related incidents compared to the same period last year, highlighting the dangers of cold-water shock.

In a tragic incident, police confirmed that a 16-year-old boy’s body was found in a lake in Nottingham, underscoring the risks of swimming in open water, even in warm weather.
