Trump Threatens to Abandon Ukraine Peace Efforts Amid Stalled Progress

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated he may abandon attempts to broker peace in Ukraine if either Kyiv or Moscow makes the process too difficult. “We will take a pass,” Trump said Friday, while maintaining hope for a peaceful resolution. “It’s coming to a head right now,” he added.

The warning follows remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated the U.S. could walk away from negotiations within days if no meaningful progress is visible. “We’re not going to continue this for weeks and months,” Rubio said after high-level meetings in Paris with European and Ukrainian leaders.

Despite mounting frustrations, there are glimmers of diplomatic movement. Trump revealed he expects to sign a mineral deal with Ukraine next week, after a February attempt failed due to clashes with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Thursday’s Paris talks — the first substantive in-person discussions including European powers — were described by Zelenskyy’s office as constructive.

Rubio said the proposed U.S. peace framework received positive feedback in Paris. He later briefed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and acknowledged that U.S. security guarantees, a key part of the talks, remain a challenge but are “fixable.”

Trump, who once vowed to end the war within 24 hours of taking office, has shifted his timeline amid growing complexities. Rubio emphasized urgency, stating, “We want to see how far apart it is and whether those differences can even be narrowed.”

With no official comment yet from France, the U.S. remains poised to shift focus if rapid progress toward peace fails to materialize.
