Director Ryan Coogler has expressed heartfelt thanks to fans after his latest film, Sinners, exceeded industry expectations and claimed the No. 1 spot at the U.S. box office during its opening weekend. The supernatural thriller, which earned $45.6 million domestically, has grossed over $71 million globally since its Friday debut.
In a message shared on X, Coogler extended gratitude to those who went out of their way to support the film—thanking moviegoers who arranged childcare, adjusted work schedules, or saw the movie multiple times. He described Sinners as a deeply personal project inspired by his ancestry and designed to be experienced in theaters.
The film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twin brothers who face paranormal events after opening a juke joint in their Mississippi hometown. The cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and Delroy Lindo.
Making history, Sinners became the first film shot in both Ultra Panavision 70 and IMAX, and the first to be released combining both formats. Coogler, best known for Creed, Fruitvale Station, and Black Panther, said the response to Sinners has “reinvigorated” his belief in cinema’s power and potential.
