New Documentary Unveils Untold Secrets of Penguins Ahead of Earth Day

“Secrets of the Penguins,” a groundbreaking three-part documentary series narrated by Blake Lively and hosted by National Geographic explorer Bertie Gregory, will premiere on Disney+ on Monday, just in time for Earth Day. This captivating series, filmed over two years, takes viewers into some of the most extreme environments on Earth, offering new insights into the extraordinary lives of penguins.

Filmed over 274 days on the Ekström Ice Shelf in Antarctica, home to around 20,000 emperor penguins, as well as in locations like Cape Town and the Galapagos Islands, the series reveals previously unknown behaviors of penguins. Gregory, who has extensive experience filming penguins, admitted he was astonished by what he learned during this project. One of the most memorable scenes captured is penguin chicks taking their first dive into the sea from a 50-foot ice cliff, a spectacle that has never been filmed before.

Gregory highlights the challenges penguins face, particularly their ability to raise their young during the harsh Antarctic winter, one of the coldest and most unforgiving environments on Earth. His work emphasizes the broader significance of conserving healthy, wild ecosystems, not just for penguins, but for the planet as a whole.

Gregory, a two-time Daytime Emmy Award winner, stresses that while he admires Sir David Attenborough’s legendary career, he does not seek to replace him, acknowledging that Attenborough’s influence is irreplaceable.
