Clem Burke, Legendary Blondie Drummer, Dies at 70 Following Battle with Cancer

Clem Burke, the long-time drummer for the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band Blondie, has died at the age of 70 after a private battle with cancer. The band honored his legacy in a statement, calling him “the heartbeat of Blondie,” highlighting his unmatched talent, energy, and influence on the band’s success.

Burke, born Clement Bozewski in Bayonne, New Jersey, was the 50th drummer auditioned by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein when they formed Blondie in 1974. His addition to the band marked the beginning of an era that would revolutionize rock music, blending new wave, punk, and disco into a unique sound. His drumming was integral to Blondie’s chart-topping hits, including “Heart of Glass,” “One Way or Another,” and “Call Me.”

Throughout his career, Burke collaborated with many legendary artists, including Bob Dylan, Joan Jett, and Iggy Pop, showcasing his versatility and love for music. After Blondie’s initial break-up in the early ’80s, Burke continued to play, forming Chequered Past with members of the Sex Pistols and collaborating with countless others.

Blondie reunited in 1999 with Burke returning as the drummer, and the band went on to release multiple albums, including “Pollinator” in 2017. Burke was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Blondie in 2006, paying tribute to The Beatles’ Ringo Starr during his speech.

Burke’s legacy lives on in his contributions to both Blondie and the wider rock music scene. His bandmates and fellow musicians, including Johnny Marr and Nancy Sinatra, paid tribute to the influential drummer on social media.
