Jess Nichols, a 30-year-old man from Brandon, has been sentenced to five years in prison for killing 25 animals, including numerous kittens, over a five-month period three years ago. The court described his actions as “stunning” and “brutal” in their severity.
Nichols was initially arrested in June 2022 after his roommate found several dead kittens outside their home. A subsequent investigation revealed the extent of his cruelty, with police discovering more deceased animals in November 2022, including rabbits and kittens. Despite bail conditions prohibiting him from owning pets, Nichols continued to collect and harm animals, claiming he “couldn’t live without them.”
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta condemned Nichols for his actions, stating that they caused “substantial harm” to the animals involved. She noted that Nichols showed minimal remorse, attempting to downplay the violence and injury caused to the animals, and minimizing the seriousness of his crimes. His actions were exacerbated by his mental health struggles and drug addiction, but the court maintained that his moral culpability was significant.
In addition to his prison sentence, Nichols received a lifetime ban on owning or having custody of any animals, ensuring he cannot harm animals again.
