Edmonton’s Marco Arop surged to victory in the men’s 800 metres at the Grand Slam Track event in Miramar, Florida, on Saturday, clocking a season-best 1:43.69. Arop edged American Yared Nuguse (1:43.75) and Australia’s Peter Bol (1:44.13) in a thrilling finish. Despite placing second in the short distance group, Arop’s consistent dominance reaffirms his world champion status in the event.
Josh Kerr of Great Britain took the men’s short distance title and a $100,000 prize, placing fifth in the 800m but combining that result with his Friday win in the 1,500m. In the men’s 100m, Kenny Bednarek stormed to victory in 9.79, while Canadians Jerome Blake (10.04) and Andre De Grasse (10.05) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
In the women’s 1,500m, Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu won with a time of 4:06.96, ahead of Americans Nikki Hiltz and Diribe Welteji. Toronto’s Lucia Stafford placed sixth with 4:14.66.
