Spring Whiteout Engulfs Downtown Winnipeg as Jets Fans Rally for NHL Playoff Opener

Downtown Winnipeg transformed into a sea of white on Sunday as thousands of passionate fans flooded the streets to celebrate the beginning of the Winnipeg Jets’ 2025 Stanley Cup Playoff campaign. The city’s iconic “Whiteout” tradition roared back to life, uniting residents and visitors in a spectacle of team pride, community spirit, and playoff excitement.

As the Jets hit the ice for their first-round matchup, fans donned white jerseys, jackets, hats, and even face paint to show support. The Whiteout Street Party, which began hours before puck drop, featured live music, food trucks, beer gardens, family-friendly activities, and massive screens broadcasting the game for those without tickets to Canada Life Centre.

The atmosphere was electric. Entire city blocks were closed off as thousands of Jets supporters chanted, cheered, and waved rally towels under crisp spring skies. Despite the calendar saying April, the Whiteout made it feel like a winter celebration—with the warmth of a united fanbase.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham praised the turnout, saying, “This is more than hockey. It’s about Winnipeg coming together. The Whiteout is a tradition that brings energy and pride to our city like nothing else.”

Local businesses also got a boost, with bars, restaurants, and retailers packed with fans throughout the day. Hotels reported a spike in bookings, as visitors from across Manitoba and beyond joined the festivities.

The Whiteout tradition began in 1987 during the Jets’ original NHL run and has since evolved into one of the league’s most recognizable fan rituals. True to form, this year’s kickoff event exceeded expectations, showing the enduring passion Winnipeg holds for its team.

Police and emergency services reported a smooth event, with minimal incidents and high cooperation from the public. Volunteers and organizers ensured the event remained safe, inclusive, and full of energy, reinforcing Winnipeg’s reputation as a proud hockey town with a world-class playoff atmosphere.

The Jets are expected to feed off the energy of their loyal fans as they begin their postseason journey. With the city behind them and the Whiteout in full force, hopes are high for a deep playoff run in 2025.
