Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener Omoyele Sowore has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s role in the political crisis in Rivers State, accusing him of abusing his presidential power and acting as a political godfather. Speaking on Arise Television, Sowore criticized the removal of democratically elected officials and warned that Tinubu’s actions could signal the downfall of Nigeria’s entrenched political godfathers.
He alleged a conspiracy among three key figures—Tinubu, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio—whom he claimed dominate Nigeria’s government by controlling the executive, judiciary, and legislative arms. According to Sowore, these former governors have risen to power through impunity, leading to the current state of governance.
Sowore recalled that when Tinubu was Lagos governor, he opposed any declaration of a state of emergency, warning it would threaten democracy. Now, as president, he accused Tinubu of wielding absolute power and daring Nigerians to challenge him.
He further described the situation as “state capture,” where political leaders manipulate resources and silence opposition to consolidate control, particularly over resource-rich states like Rivers, Lagos, and Akwa Ibom.
