South Korean singer Wheesung has been found dead at his home in Seoul, CNN affiliate YTN reported on Monday.
Police are investigating the cause of the 43-year-old’s death and have requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service, according to YTN.
Wheesung, born Choi Whee-sung, debuted in 2002 and rose to fame with his hit “Can’t I,” earning recognition for his powerful vocals and unique genre-blending style.
His agency confirmed his death, stating that his bereaved family is in deep shock and unable to hold a funeral at this time, YTN reported.
Wheesung was set to perform alongside fellow South Korean singer KCM on Saturday, but the concert has been canceled. KCM posted a white flower on Instagram in tribute, as fans and fellow artists flooded social media with condolences.
Singer Yoon Min-soo expressed hope of reuniting with Wheesung someday, while rapper Verbal Jint called his time with the “One Year” singer an honor, YTN reported.
The recent deaths of young K-pop idols and K-drama stars have intensified concerns over mental health struggles in South Korea’s entertainment industry.
Wheesung’s passing follows the death of South Korean actor Kim Sae-ron last month at age 24. Other high-profile deaths include actor Song Jae-lim at 39, ASTRO’s Moonbin at 25, singer-actress Sulli at 25 in 2019, and SHINee’s Kim Jong-hyun at 27 in 2017.
Entertainment agencies have introduced mental health support measures, including counseling and adjusted schedules, but experts warn that the industry’s high-pressure environment, public scrutiny, and expectations of perfection continue to impact stars.
