Sony Pictures Unveils Beatles Biopics at CinemaCon, Aims to Revitalize Theatergoing

Sony Pictures made a bold statement at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, unveiling their highly anticipated Beatles biopic series and a star-studded lineup of actors portraying John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The announcement comes as Hollywood studios push to revitalize movie theater attendance amid a challenging box office climate.

Director Sam Mendes revealed that the four films will premiere in April 2028, each told from the perspective of one of The Beatles. The lead actors for the roles were confirmed as Paul Mescal (McCartney), Joseph Quinn (Harrison), Barry Keoghan (Starr), and Harris Dickinson (Lennon). Mendes touted the project as the “first binge-able theatrical experience,” capturing the essence of the legendary band in a groundbreaking way.

In addition to the Beatles films, Sony’s presentation included a debut trailer for “28 Years Later,” the long-awaited sequel to “28 Days Later” by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle, as well as a preview of “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” the latest installment in the Spider-Verse trilogy.

At the event, CEO Tom Rothman encouraged theater owners to adopt creative strategies, like weekday discounts, to attract audiences, while Sony executive Adam Bergerman advocated for extending films’ theater runs.

The event comes amid a difficult start to 2025 at the box office, with ticket sales down 11% compared to the same period in 2024, and nearly 40% from 2019, according to Comscore.
