Myanmar’s military rulers allowed foreign rescue teams into the country on Saturday following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that has claimed over 1,000 lives. The powerful quake struck on Friday, crippling airports, bridges, and highways. Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts
In Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, survivors used their bare hands to search for trapped victims, as rescue operations were hindered by a lack of heavy machinery and government assistance. Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, the junta leader, visited the worst-hit areas, calling for expedited search and rescue efforts.
The quake has destroyed at least 2,900 buildings, 30 roads, and seven bridges, according to Myanmar’s opposition National Unity Government. Naypyitaw and Mandalay international airports remain closed due to severe structural damage, including the collapse of Naypyitaw’s air traffic control tower.
Predictive models from the U.S. Geological Survey estimate that Myanmar’s death toll could exceed 10,000, with economic losses surpassing the country’s annual output.
International Aid and Response
Flights carrying aid from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, and Singapore have landed in Yangon, as Myanmar’s military government appeals for international assistance. ASEAN has pledged support for relief efforts, while South Korea announced an initial $2 million in humanitarian aid.
Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged $13.77 million in assistance, including emergency supplies like tents, blankets, and medical kits. The U.S., despite strained relations with Myanmar’s military, has also committed to providing aid.
Thailand’s Struggle to Find Survivors
In Bangkok, rescue teams continue searching for 47 construction workers trapped under the collapsed 33-story high-rise. Authorities have deployed drones, excavators, and search-and-rescue dogs as they work around the clock to locate survivors.
The earthquake has left up to 5,000 buildings in Bangkok damaged, including residential towers. Engineering teams are inspecting structures to assess potential hazards.
As Myanmar and Thailand grapple with the aftermath, search and rescue operations remain urgent, with hopes fading for those still trapped beneath the rubble.
