Senegal’s Ruling Pastef Party Secures Dominance in Parliament, Bolstering Reform Agenda
Senegal’s Pastef party has achieved a decisive victory in the nation’s legislative elections, securing 130 out of 165 parliamentary seats, according to provisional results released by the national vote-counting commission. This majority provides newly elected President Bassirou Diomaye Faye with a robust mandate to implement his ambitious reform agenda, a cornerstone of his campaign.
A Resounding Vote of Confidence
The sweeping victory signals strong public backing for Pastef’s vision of governance. Amadou Ba, a senior party representative, described the outcome as a critical endorsement of the government’s reformist platform. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Ba emphasized the significance of the victory for both domestic and international stakeholders.
“This is not just a victory for Pastef but for the Senegalese people, demonstrating their trust in this administration. It sends a clear message to our technical and financial partners that Senegal stands united behind this government,” Ba stated in remarks broadcast on state television.
Ba further underscored the urgency of implementing structural reforms, including anti-corruption initiatives, modernization of the fishing industry, and maximizing benefits from Senegal’s natural resources.
Opposition Concedes Defeat
The opposition, led by former President Macky Sall, secured 16 seats in the election. Sall acknowledged Pastef’s win in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on election day, while other opposition leaders conceded shortly after polls closed.
Pastef’s legislative triumph is widely attributed to Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, whose strategic leadership has been instrumental in rallying public support. Sonko, a charismatic figure, played a pivotal role in the party’s rise to power alongside Faye in March.
A New Chapter for Senegal
The landslide comes after months of political recalibration. Faye dissolved the previous opposition-dominated parliament in September and called for snap elections, citing its obstruction of government initiatives.
Now, with a clear majority, Faye and Sonko aim to accelerate their vision for a self-reliant Senegal. Key priorities include diversifying economic partnerships, renegotiating contracts in the hydrocarbon and fishing sectors, and reclaiming national sovereignty.
This parliamentary victory positions Pastef to deliver on its promises and reshape Senegal’s political and economic landscape, solidifying its role as a driving force for change.
