Senate Moves to Prevent Government Shutdown Ahead of Midnight Deadline
As the midnight deadline approaches, the U.S. Senate is actively working to avert a partial government shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has announced his support for a Republican-drafted stopgap funding bill, aiming to keep federal agencies operational until September 30.
This continuing resolution proposes a $13 billion reduction in non-defense spending while increasing defense allocations by $6 billion, totaling nearly $1.7 trillion in government funding. The bill has already passed the Republican-led House, placing pressure on the Senate to act promptly to prevent a shutdown.
The decision has sparked internal debates among Senate Democrats. During a private meeting, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand reportedly expressed strong opposition to the bill, highlighting concerns over granting excessive discretion to President Trump regarding spending decisions.
Despite reservations, Schumer emphasized the importance of avoiding a shutdown, suggesting that the consequences would be more detrimental, potentially allowing the administration to unilaterally determine essential government functions.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on the bill today. If approved, it will proceed to President Trump’s desk for final authorization, ensuring the continuity of federal operations and averting a shutdown.
