The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) has confirmed the death of 50-year-old inmate Shane Kruchak at Stony Mountain Institution. Kruchak passed away on January 23, 2025, while in custody. He had been serving a sentence of 2 years, 6 months, and 18 days, which began on December 4, 2024.
This marks the second inmate death at the facility this week, following the passing of 54-year-old Michael McKay on January 21, 2025.
The CSC has notified Kruchak’s next of kin and is now reviewing the circumstances surrounding his death. The investigation involves the RCMP and the coroner’s office to determine the cause.
Stony Mountain Institution is a medium-security federal penitentiary located just north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. It houses male inmates serving sentences of two years or longer.
The deaths of two inmates within days of each other have raised concerns about conditions at the facility. The CSC’s investigation is ongoing as it works to clarify the events leading up to these fatalities.
