Amid escalating trade tensions, some Saskatchewan residents are canceling travel plans to the U.S., citing patriotism and financial concerns.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 10% tariff on Canadian oil and a 25% tariff on other goods, effective Tuesday. In response, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged a 25% tariff on $30 billion worth of American goods, with an extension to $125 billion more in three weeks. However, after discussions with Trudeau, Trump agreed to delay the tariffs for 30 days.
Despite this temporary reprieve, many Saskatchewanians are altering their travel plans. Social media posts reveal individuals choosing to stay within Canada due to rising costs, dissatisfaction with the U.S. administration, and impending tariffs.
Joel Yeomans of Regina, who frequently visits Arizona with his family, has already canceled a planned Las Vegas anniversary trip. He attributes this decision to increased U.S. prices, the desire to invest in Canadian travel, and a surge in national pride. He noted, “No one really cares when we tell them we’re mad, but they care when we decide to stop spending our dollars.”
As some of their parents’ friends consider selling U.S. properties, Yeomans believes his family may not have to weigh visiting relatives against avoiding American travel.
Similarly, Jeff Roffey of Regina has scrapped multiple U.S. trips, including a Labor Day visit to Seattle, citing policy concerns rather than currency fluctuations. His family, avid travelers to Disney World, Taylor Swift concerts, and Broadway shows, is redirecting their funds to Europe instead. “It’s the tariffs, it’s poor administration, not the dollar,” Roffey said.
For him, even if the trade war cools, the damage is done. He sees a silver lining in the sense of national unity emerging from this economic standoff.
