Rory McIlroy Eyes Redemption at US Open After Equipment Setbacks and Motivation Dip

Rory McIlroy, fresh off completing the career Grand Slam with a dramatic win at The Masters, has faced a tumultuous stretch ahead of the 2025 US Open. Despite his Augusta triumph, McIlroy missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open and finished tied-47th at Quail Hollow after being forced to switch drivers when his trusted TaylorMade Qi10 was ruled non-conforming.

The world No. 2 is returning to the Qi10 driver at Oakmont after experimenting with alternatives, seeking consistency off the tee. McIlroy admitted to “searching for a missing piece” in his recent performances and posted a discouraging 11-over 81 in a practice round at Oakmont on June 2.

He acknowledged a lack of motivation post-Masters but has refocused for the season’s final stretch, targeting the US Open, Royal Portrush, and the Ryder Cup. McIlroy, who previously struggled at US Opens, now embraces their difficulty, having posted six straight top-10s and finishing runner-up in the last two editions.

The five-time major champion credits his transformation to a mindset shift in 2018, aiming to build his game around golf’s toughest tests. McIlroy will tee off alongside Shane Lowry and Justin Rose in his 17th US Open appearance, aiming to capitalize on momentum and solidify his legacy.
