Robbie Williams has revealed he purchased Eric Morecambe’s glasses and pipe, describing the legendary comedian as an “uncle of sorts.”
The singer shared that he cried “happy, childlike tears” after winning the auction last month with a top bid of £20,000—far exceeding the estimated £2,000 to £4,000 valuation.
In an Instagram post, Williams posted photos of himself wearing the glasses and pipe, explaining that he treated himself to the memorabilia ahead of his 51st birthday. He recalled appointing his team member, Mike, as “chief bidder” while he was in Los Angeles, closely following the auction via his iPhone.
“As it happens, I got to watch the lot being auctioned live. My iPhone and Mike’s iPhone acting like walkie-talkies,” Williams wrote.
During the bidding war, Williams said he nervously sought advice from his wife, Ayda Field, who encouraged him to “keep bidding” with unwavering determination.
Once he secured the items, the Angels singer expressed deep admiration for Morecambe, stating, “To the very core of me, Eric Morecambe’s spirit has been salve for my soul. How Eric made me feel is how I want to make people feel.”
The auctioned items included Morecambe’s signature Metzler tortoiseshell glasses, his Barling briar pipe, and two black-and-white photographs of him wearing the spectacles. Morecambe’s belongings were offered in 700 lots by Hanson Auctioneers on January 10 and 11, more than 40 years after the comedian passed away from a heart attack in 1984 at the age of 58.
