Brendan Liaw, a 27-year-old from Richmond, fulfilled a childhood dream by appearing on Jeopardy!—and winning his first game. A trivia enthusiast since high school, Liaw was selected after passing two rigorous online tests, a mock game, and an interview. He taped his episode on March 17 in Los Angeles.
Liaw, who holds a master’s degree from UBC, opted for a more humorous self-description on the show: “stay-at-home son.” He explained that he wanted to bring a lighthearted touch to the show, saying, “If I lose, I might as well make some people laugh.”
Despite trailing early in the game, Liaw triumphed with a $13,599 win in Tuesday night’s episode. He described the experience as a blur of quick thinking and fast buzzing.
Asked how his parents felt about the “stay-at-home” title, Liaw joked, “They prefer professional loiterer at this point. I think they want to promote me to away-from-home son soon.”
Though he can’t say how long his Jeopardy! run lasted, Liaw confirmed he’s still job-hunting and living at home. “If there’s anyone out there who wants to hire a guy who’s mildly amusing and has broad-based knowledge, please contact me.”
The win has brought him a wave of online support, and he’s hoping to make Richmond proud with his quirky charm and trivia prowess.
