Imagine wearing AI-enabled smart glasses that serve as your personal tutor or using a VR headset to immerse yourself in real-life scenarios of classroom lessons. This cutting-edge learning experience is now becoming a reality for students at Georgian College, thanks to a three-year collaboration with Meta.
As one of the first Canadian colleges to partner with Meta, Georgian is paving the way for intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) powered by generative AI (GenAI) and extended reality (XR). Utilizing Meta’s Llama 3 platform, one of the most advanced open-source large language models, the college is developing an intuitive AI tutor to transform how students learn. Initial courses include anatomy and physiology, with plans to expand into other programs.
“This ambitious model blending ITS with adaptive learning envisions a flipped classroom approach, where educators shift from delivering content to fostering case-based problem-solving and critical analysis,” said Yael Katz, vice-president, academic, Georgian College.
Meta’s support includes financial investment and Ray-Ban Meta glasses to facilitate three project phases led by Georgian’s research, innovation, and entrepreneurship department. In Phase 1, students will use AI-integrated smart glasses to identify and learn concepts visually. Phase 2 adds augmented reality headsets to deliver personalized, visual content, while Phase 3 introduces immersive virtual reality, enabling students to interact with 3D environments and scenarios.
“This uniquely adaptive, interactive learning platform promises to push students through all levels of learning, from basic recall to higher-order analytical skills,” said Rob Theriault, immersive technology manager at Georgian.
The partnership underscores the college’s commitment to hands-on, innovative learning, preparing students for the future of work through AI-enhanced education.
