The Regina Public Library (RPL) has taken a groundbreaking step in accessibility, becoming one of the first in Canada to implement dual navigational systems for individuals with hearing loss and visual impairments.
In late 2024, all RPL branches were equipped with BlindSquare, an innovative navigation system that leverages physical beacons and GPS data to provide audio instructions via smartphones. This free app, available on both Apple and Android devices, guides users with auditory cues about their surroundings. “It provides direction on where things are. It will also tell you if the floor is changing, if it’s going to change from carpet to tile,” explained Mark Black, branch manager of the RPL Central location.
In addition to BlindSquare, RPL has installed hearing loops across all locations. These advanced sound systems transmit directly to a wide variety of hearing aids, ensuring crystal-clear communication between staff and patrons at service desks. To use the hearing loops, users simply switch their devices to the designated frequency.
RPL has also introduced the Envoy Connect, a portable device capable of storing 15-20 audiobooks. Designed for easy listening, the Envoy Connect comes equipped with a built-in speaker, enhancing the library’s offerings for audiobook enthusiasts.
These initiatives were made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of Regina, announced in May 2024. The contribution has significantly advanced RPL’s framework for removing accessibility barriers. The funds have supported technology upgrades and the installation of accessibility workstations at major library branches, reinforcing RPL’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation.
