Jones Auction House in Saint John, N.B., known for its prestigious art auctions since its launch in 2022, is now offering a rare prehistoric treasure. Siblings Caleb and Sarah Jones have announced the auction of six authentic megalodon teeth, open for bidding from March 16 to 30.
Auction House Director Caleb Jones expressed enthusiasm for handling unique items beyond their usual fine art, emphasizing their commitment to facilitating diverse collections. The teeth come from a northern New Brunswick collector who owns one of Canada’s largest private megalodon fossil collections.
The fossilized teeth vary in size and condition, with some retaining natural barnacle formations while others have a polished finish. According to curator Sarah Jones, both styles appeal to collectors, with unpolished specimens highlighting serrations and natural features, while polished teeth offer a refined display aesthetic.
Discovered off the shores of North Carolina, megalodon teeth are among the most recognizable prehistoric fossils, highly coveted by collectors and scientists alike. The Jones siblings admit the auction has been an educational journey, as they delved into the science of the extinct shark species and the valuation criteria for these fossils.
Depending on the success of this sale, the auction house may offer more megalodon teeth in the future. The current auction also features artwork from Maud Lewis, Christopher Pratt, and Molly Lamb Bobak, along with designer accessories from Rolex and Versace.
Bidding for the megalodon teeth closes on March 30 at 6 p.m. Each tooth is auctioned separately, but a single buyer can acquire them all with the highest bids.
