Rachel Homan successfully defended her world women’s curling championship title, leading Canada to a 7-3 victory over Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni on Sunday in Uijeongbu, South Korea. This marks Homan’s second consecutive world title after defeating Tirinzoni in last year’s final in Sydney, N.S.
Homan, alongside teammates Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew, and Sarah Wilkes, became the first Canadian team to win back-to-back world championships since Sandra Schmirler’s rink achieved the feat in 1993 and 1994.
“My team was just throwing it so well,” Homan said. “We’re so happy we could do Canada proud and bring home the gold again. Back-to-back is an unbelievable feeling.”
Canada took control in the seventh end, scoring two to lead 4-3. A missed draw from Switzerland’s Alina Paetz in the eighth allowed Canada to steal two more for a 6-3 advantage. Switzerland conceded in the ninth after another missed shot, securing the 7-3 win for Homan’s team.
Homan and Miskew now hold three career world titles, having also won gold in 2017. The victory also secures their place in November’s Olympic trials in Halifax, where they will compete for a spot at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
