Quebec Snowbirds Flee Florida: Rising Costs and Political Frustrations Prompt Exodus

Many Quebec snowbirds are selling their Florida properties, citing high living costs and a favorable exchange rate driven by the weak Canadian dollar.

Jasmin Gosselin, a longtime visitor to Boynton Beach, Florida, has decided to sell his condo after more than 20 years. Gosselin attributes his decision to both financial pressures and U.S. President Donald Trump’s attitude toward Canada, which he perceives as disrespectful.

“Trump doesn’t respect Canada or snowbirds who spend months feeding their economy,” Gosselin told Daybreak’s Sean Henry. Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods have further fueled Gosselin’s concerns, alongside rising homeowner association fees that have nearly doubled in five years.

Insurance and health expenses have also strained the couple’s finances, but the weak Canadian dollar, currently at $0.70 USD, offers a profitable opportunity. “When I bought the place 11 years ago, the US dollar was much lower. I’ll make a capital gain,” he explained.

Real estate broker Alexandra DuPont reports a surge in Quebec snowbirds selling their Florida homes. She attributes this to the exchange rate and escalating costs, with fewer buyers entering the market.

For some, like Gosselin, political tensions add to the desire for change. “We might go somewhere else,” he shared. “First step is to sell the place and then we’ll see.”
