Prince Harry Loses U.K. Security Appeal, Says Return Home Is ‘Impossible’ Without Protection

Prince Harry says it is “impossible” to bring his family back to the U.K. safely after losing a legal appeal to restore full police protection. The British Home Office ruled in 2020 that Harry, who stepped down from royal duties, would no longer receive automatic high-level security—an outcome he called “pretty gutted about” in a BBC interview.

Harry criticized the ruling, upheld by the Court of Appeal, and urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper to reconsider. He argued that his royal identity and high-profile status still make him a target, citing threats from groups like al-Qaeda and a dangerous paparazzi incident in New York in 2023.

Although he expressed hopes of reconciling with his family, Harry claimed King Charles “won’t speak to me because of this security stuff.” He emphasized that his royal status “can’t change,” comparing his situation to other public figures who retain protection post-service.

The case comes amid a broader rift with the royal family, detailed in Harry’s memoir Spare and a Netflix documentary. He and Meghan Markle, who now live in California with their two children, stepped back from royal duties in 2020, citing racism and lack of palace support.

Meanwhile, Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Canada from May 26–27, reinforcing ties with the Commonwealth nation.
