Prime Minister Mark Carney hit the ice with the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday at Rogers Place, sporting a No. 24 jersey and Oilers cap as the team prepared for their game against the Western Conference-leading Winnipeg Jets.
Carney, who was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister on March 14, is a lifelong Oilers fan, having grown up in Edmonton during the team’s dominant 1980s Stanley Cup era. He previously played hockey as a third-string goaltender at Harvard and co-captained Oxford University’s Blues hockey team.
While suiting up as a skater, Carney wore goalie skates—something that caught the attention of Oilers captain Connor McDavid. “He looked like a goalie with those skates,” McDavid said. “But it’s always nice to have an Oilers fan around.”
Carney was in Edmonton for a meeting with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. With a federal election expected to be called for as early as April 28, Carney’s Liberals face a challenge in Alberta, where they currently hold just two of the province’s 34 seats.
