The ongoing postal strike has thrust the importance of traditional mail back into the spotlight, according to Marvin Ryder, a business professor at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business in Hamilton.
“People have forgotten how crucial mail services are,” Ryder said, noting the strike’s impact on everyday essentials, such as renewing passports.
Currently, more than 80,000 completed passports sit in Mississauga, awaiting delivery through letter mail. The strike, now in its third week, has caused delays in vital government documents like passports, health cards, and driver’s license renewal notices.
Canadians who need urgent passport services are being urged to contact Service Canada or visit in person to arrange for pickup. Without this, those who didn’t pay for expedited service may face significant delays.
The ripple effects also extend to critical health services, including delays in at-home cancer screening kits. The strike underscores just how indispensable mail delivery remains for Canadians’ access to vital resources.
