Pope Francis Seen for First Time in Over a Month as Vatican Releases Hospital Chapel Photo

The Vatican on Sunday released the first photograph of Pope Francis in more than a month, capturing him co-celebrating Mass in the hospital chapel.

The image, taken from behind, shows the pontiff seated in a wheelchair, wearing a purple stole in front of an altar.

Francis has remained out of public view since his hospital admission on February 14 due to bronchitis, which later escalated to double pneumonia and a polymicrobial infection. His hospitalization was marked by a series of complications, including respiratory crises, mild kidney failure, and severe coughing fits.

Doctors confirmed this week that the Pope is no longer in critical condition, though his health remains delicate due to his age, limited mobility, and the partial lung removal he underwent in his youth. Despite fewer medical updates, an X-ray confirmed the infection is subsiding.

The Vatican’s latest statement on Saturday revealed that doctors are gradually reducing his reliance on nighttime non-invasive ventilation, aiming to strengthen his lungs. While his condition remains stable, he continues to require hospitalization for treatment and ongoing physical and respiratory therapy, which are showing gradual improvements.

The Vatican announced that the next health update will be provided mid-week.
