Pope Francis Faces Health Setback Amid Double Pneumonia Battle

Pope Francis suffered a severe coughing fit on Friday, leading to the inhalation of vomit and requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican reported. The 88-year-old pontiff remained conscious and responsive throughout, cooperating with medical efforts to stabilize his condition. He continues to receive supplemental oxygen through a mask, showing positive oxygen exchange levels.

This incident marks a downturn in what had been a string of improving health reports since his hospitalization at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on February 14. The Vatican stated that the episode caused a “sudden worsening of the respiratory picture,” prompting doctors to closely monitor his condition over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Medical professionals described the event as an “isolated crisis of bronchial spasm,” distinguishing it from his previous respiratory failure on February 22. While no reference has been made to Francis being in critical condition, physicians remain cautious about his overall recovery due to the complexity of his case.

With Ash Wednesday approaching, the Vatican has appointed Cardinal Angelo De Donatis to preside over the March 5 ceremony, underscoring the Pope’s prolonged recovery. Earlier in the day, Francis spent time alternating between high-flow oxygen therapy and prayer, continuing to read and engage in limited activities. The Vatican also released a document signed by Francis, reinforcing that he is still working despite his hospitalization.

Supporters worldwide continue to pray for his recovery. In Mexico City, a gathering of faithful expressed deep concern for the Pope, reflecting his profound influence on the global Catholic community.

Despite gradual improvement, uncertainties loom over the Pope’s upcoming engagements, including his traditional Sunday noon blessing. With Holy Week and Easter approaching, his participation remains in question. Additionally, his planned attendance at the May 24 commemoration of the 1,700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea is yet to be confirmed.
