At 9:45 AM, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, announced the death of Pope Francis from Casa Santa Marta. “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father… With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Later on Monday, Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni stated that the Pope’s body may be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, for public veneration, with further details pending the first Cardinals’ Congregation.
Pope Francis had been hospitalized on February 14 after suffering bronchitis. His condition worsened, and on February 18, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia. After 38 days, he returned to Casa Santa Marta for continued recovery.
Throughout his life, Pope Francis endured respiratory issues. In 1957, he had part of a lung removed, and in November 2023, he canceled a UAE trip due to influenza and inflammation. Yet, he remained dedicated, approving in April 2024 a revised edition of the papal funeral rite, which he hoped would reflect humility and the Church’s faith in the Resurrection.
Archbishop Diego Ravelli emphasized Pope Francis’ wishes for a simple funeral, portraying him not as a worldly leader, but as “a pastor and disciple of Christ.”
