Brazil’s state oil company, Petrobras, is seeking to re-enter Nigeria’s oil industry, targeting frontier deepwater acreage, as part of renewed bilateral ties ahead of the 2025 Nigeria-Brazil Strategic Dialogue Mechanism (SDM). Senior Nigerian officials confirmed active engagements with Petrobras during an interministerial meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja.
Shettima highlighted 2025 as a pivotal year for Nigeria-Brazil relations, with Brazil hosting major global events such as the BRICS Summit and G20, offering Nigeria a platform to advance its global interests. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported ongoing preparations with draft MOUs across sectors including energy, health, culture, and agriculture.
Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar noted Petrobras’s keen interest in Nigeria’s deepwater oil acreage and collaboration on ethanol blending with NNPCL. Other ministers underscored cooperation in cultural exchanges, agriculture research, and health system improvements, leveraging Brazil’s expertise in universal health coverage and tropical disease research.
