Outrage Erupts Over Biden’s Plan to Honor Hillary Clinton and George Soros with Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Joe Biden’s decision to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and billionaire philanthropist George Soros has sparked significant backlash online. The medal, considered the nation’s highest civilian honor, is awarded to individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal endeavors,” according to the White House.

Social media platforms were ablaze with criticism on Saturday after the announcement. Tesla CEO Elon Musk was among the most vocal, calling the decision to honor Soros “a travesty.” Musk shared a clip from his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where he alleged Soros “fundamentally hates humanity” and accused him of undermining civilization by supporting district attorneys who “refuse to prosecute crime.”

A Controversial Selection

Hillary Clinton’s inclusion drew mixed reactions. As the first female senator from New York and the first woman nominated for president by a major U.S. political party, Clinton has a storied political career. However, critics pointed to her controversial tenure as Secretary of State, highlighting her handling of the Benghazi attacks in 2012, which resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Additionally, her use of a private email server for government business remains a contentious issue, though the FBI declined to recommend prosecution.

The White House praised Clinton for her decades of public service and her role in breaking barriers for women in politics. Her husband, former President Bill Clinton, also received the honor during Barack Obama’s administration.

Soros, a prominent donor to progressive causes and the founder of the Open Society Foundations, was lauded by the White House for his philanthropic efforts, which they said have strengthened democracy, human rights, and social justice globally. However, conservative commentators have long accused him of fueling crime waves by supporting progressive district attorneys and policies they claim are soft on crime.

Broader Recognition and Legacy

The ceremony, scheduled for Saturday, will honor 17 other individuals alongside Clinton and Soros. Notable recipients include actors Denzel Washington and Michael J. Fox, basketball legend Magic Johnson, and soccer star Lionel Messi. The late Robert F. Kennedy will also be posthumously awarded for his contributions to racial equality and poverty alleviation.

The White House defended the selections, stating, “President Biden believes great leaders keep the faith, give everyone a fair shot, and put decency above all else. These individuals have made America a better place through their extraordinary contributions.”

Despite the commendations, the decision has amplified divisions, with critics arguing that some recipients fall short of the medal’s intended purpose. As the debate continues, the Presidential Medal of Freedom remains a symbol of both achievement and controversy in American society.
