OC Transpo’s newly renovated bus garage is set to support a transition to a fleet of fully electric buses by 2036, but the journey has not been without hurdles. Despite plans to add 182 electric buses by the end of 2024, Ottawa has only managed to acquire eight e-buses, with higher-capacity models now off the table. Daniel Villeneuve, manager of the city’s zero-emission bus program, emphasized that careful planning is required to avoid further disruptions in the future.
As Ottawa’s electric bus project progresses, OC Transpo faces numerous challenges, including building new infrastructure, installing specialized rolling doors, and adapting to new charging technologies. Additionally, drivers are learning to navigate the demands of electric vehicles, including ensuring proper charging and overcoming “range anxiety” due to shorter distances compared to diesel buses.
While the federal government’s zero-emission transit fund has helped, the complexities of adapting to new technology, supply chain delays, and the integration of new software systems have slowed progress. OC Transpo’s commitment to sustainability remains strong, and future plans include scaling up electric bus numbers and adapting its facilities for continued growth. The transition will also involve more strategic infrastructure and safety measures to handle battery-related risks.
Looking ahead, Ottawa aims to have 22 additional electric buses ready by the end of March, with long-term plans for further fleet expansion. However, the city continues to balance its electric ambitions with the need for additional diesel vehicles to maintain service during this period of transition.
